Thumbs down to the fanny

timbuk2If you are hip, outdoorsy and live in Missoula, you carry a fanny pack– with fashionable courier bag style strap – produced by any of the big labels, Mountain Hardware is a popular variety. I am not hip, much as I try, and I did try said vessel for a day trip this weekend and hated it. It wears awkward with any amount of weight in it, sliding down my hips. I was constantly adjusting it, cursing it, wishing I could just for once be one of the cool kids. To remedy the situation, I up-ed the now factor and pulled out the fashionable strap. To my surprise it worked. To my dismay the issue was replaced with pain. The strap dug into my shoulder and caused some very uncomfortable chaffing (the nature of chaffing). It was a toss up by the end of the day which issue was worse. Not sure if these things ever get out much, but unless you are using it to go grab a latte downtown, leave your fanny at home.

Kathryn is a Missoula-based writer, editor and recovering field biology underling-- i.e., she did all the dirty work in the worst conditions. Call her a tree-hugger and she'll kick you in the shins. When she is not writing, she's out on the trails running her dogs. Good luck trying to keep up with her.
