Beauty Products Gone Bad

One of the best aspects of being in the backcountry is that you can get dirty. I have gone 27 days without taking a shower. Surprisingly enough, my body felt great. I did not think that I smelled too badly — but, I can’t say a person from the front country would think the same. I found that after a while, my body adjusted to a lack of soap and became less greasy. I will admit, that first shower after being in the field is rated high among my favorite experiences in life. However, I find that after using shampoos, conditioners, soaps and other beauty products my skin and hair get greasier, thus showering more often. I have pondered this quite often, and have gone as far to wonder how good these products really are for our bodies.

Recently, I attended a breast cancer awareness function, where one of the speakers explained how the chemicals used in beauty products are linked to cancer, explaining how all beauty products in this country are not regulated by the FDA. It is disturbing to me that these large companies have almost free reign on the chemicals they use in their products. What with lipsticks containing lead! Why is it that lead has been removed from toys and paint, but color that you put on your lips, well! There are great non-profit organizations that have been fighting to get beauty products regulated. I recommend checking out Skin Deep and Safe Cosemetics .

Check out the products you use regularly and see how they rate.
